Interviewing

Interviewing for an internship is conducted in the same manner as full-time employment interviews. It is not acceptable for a student to miss an interview without contacting both the employer and the MBA Internship Coordinator. If a student misses an interview, he/she may lose the opportunity to complete the MBA internship option. Students who need to cancel an interview must provide 24 hour notice to both the company and the MBA Internship Coordinator. Students that cancel an interview must provide an acceptable excuse i.e., medical emergency. Interviewing with recruiters is a privilege and not a right. Students are expected to demonstrate the utmost professionalism as they are acting as a representative of the MBA Cohort Program every time they meet with a recruiter. In continuance of a professional demeanor, students are expected to promptly send a thank you note after each interview.

General Guidelines & Grading

  • Students are expected to behave and dress professionally during their internship.
  • Students will be subject to the dress and professional codes, including, but not limited to maintaining the confidentiality of the employer, and notifying the employer if unable to work.
  • Students must work 288 hours to satisfy each 3 hour internship credit course and complete the required reports list on the Internship Program Guidelines.
  • Students have the option to work on their internships between semesters and apply the time worked towards the required hours.
  • Students should contact the MBA Internship Coordinator immediately if they have any concerns since early intervention can help eliminate student or employer concerns.
  • An "I" (incomplete) grade will be issued for internships until all requirements are met. Once requirements are met, a grade of "S" (satisfactory) will be issued. An "I" grade will change to a "U" (unsatisfactory) if you have not completed the requirements by the time you turn in your Intent to Graduate Form. "U" grades will keep you from graduating.

Reports

Final Project

The final project will be due after you have completed all internship hours. It should cover what you have learned in your internship/internships overall. This project will be reviewed by your supervisor in order for them to complete your final evaluation. You will continue to receive an "I" (incomplete) grade in your internship until this paper is submitted. Failure to turn in a final paper will result in a "U" (unsatisfactory) grade and no credit will be issued for internship hours.

Your paper should be approximately 10 pages and should include a cover page containing your name, title of your internship position, name of company/organization, and current date. Please choose one of the following as the format for your final project.

  • Executive Summary
  • Business Problem/Analysis or Report
  • Marketing Plan or Business Plan
  • Portfolio

SAMPLE PROJECT STRUCTURES – Every internship is different so no two final projects will be the same. The following suggestions are starting points and should be tailored to meet your needs. Remember to include benefits derived and the positive and negative benefits of the internship.

  1. Executive Summary
    • A brief "executive" summary that describes the duties, the company, and your responsibilities. Include contact information for your company supervisor, including name, phone number, address, and email, if applicable.
    • A summary of one major project that you were responsible for. If you did not have one major project, include a description of tasks, activities and deliverables for which you were personally responsible. Be clear to differentiate your role from the group if you are working within at group setting. You may include copies of deliverables you prepared as appendices to the report.
    • A statement of the prior academic learning that you have been able to apply at the internship site.
    • A statement of the academic learning that you received through your internship.
    • A brief statement of any problems, concerns or issues.
  2. Business Problem/Analysis or Report - Analyze a business problem and provide the results of the analysis to the employer in the form of a written report.
    • Define a business problem.
    • Formulate different alternatives to "solve" the problem.
    • Recommend the best alternative.
  3. Marketing Plan or Business Plan – There are numerous formats for Marketing and Business Plans. Choose one that best fits your internship.
  4. Portfolio – Use one of the written versions above and include work samples, projects created, or anything that visually shows what you learned, what you created, or what you are proposing. Be creative!
