Internship Requirements
The College of Business Administration Academic Internship Program offers qualified undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in local businesses for a semester while receiving academic credit. Participating businesses are expecting to receive high-quality work from the students they sponsor.
Internship Coordinator
Students are responsible for their own placement in a position. The Internship Coordinator will assist in this process. You must submit completed registration forms to Dr. Stephen Goodman for approval and registration. If you have any questions about your internship, please contact him.
Students have the opportunity to make significant contributions to businesses' productivity through their involvement in research, planning, and operational functions. Students can provide valuable assistance in developing new programs, as well as perform specific duties in a variety of activities within the organization. This active participation by students in the actual management of the sponsoring organization is the primary interest of the internship.
Course Grading Criteria
Undergraduate and graduate assignments should be turned in to Dr. Stephen Goodman. Please keep in mind that MIS Internships are graded according to the university's grading scale of A, B, C, D, and F. The grade you receive in the MIS Internship course will affect your GPA. Internships will be graded based on the mid-term paper, final paper, and the evaluation forms. The mid-term paper should be 2-3 pages (4-6 pages for graduate) consisting of what you have learned and what you have been responsible for in the company. The final paper should be 5-8 pages (10-16 pages for graduate) describing your full internship experiences, and new responsibilities in either paper or journal format. The evaluation form from the sponsoring company is due at the same time as the final paper and will be used to determine a student's grade. The evaluation form from the student evaluating the internship program is also due at the same time as the final paper but it will not affect the student's grade unless it is not submitted to the department. The following questions should assist you in preparing your reports. You may write the reports in your own style, although an informative and effective report will include comments on the questions and issues listed below. You are not limited to only these questions nor should you feel you have to answer all of them. Instead they are designed to get you thinking about your experiences thus far at your company.
- Suggested Report Topics
- A brief statement regarding the company and the department to which you were assigned.
- Description of your various job duties.
- Describe the training you have received for your position. What new skills have you acquired?
- How do you relate what you have learned in school with your internship job responsibilities? Thus far, has your work experience clarified material you have learned in class?
- Have you encountered anything not covered in your classes that would have helped you function better in your internship assignment?
- What benefits have you gained from this internship experience thus far?
- How have your career objectives been affected by your internship experience?
- Do you feel that your abilities were, or are being, used effectively?
- What aspects of your internship were least valuable to you?
Steps to Complete Internship
The goal of the MIS Internship program is to enable the student to obtain practical experience by engaging in a variety of significant projects and applying academic skills and knowledge in a work environment.
- Students must have a minimum of a 2.75 GPA in all work completed at the University of Central Florida, and a minimum of 3.0 GPA in their major.
- Only students who have completed ISM 3011, ISM 3253, and ISM 4212 are eligible.
In order to carry out your internship, you must complete the following steps:
- Secure an internship position with a company. The student must work at least 300 hours at the company during one semester to earn internship credit. It will be up to the student to find a company willing to participate in the internship. The MIS Internship Advisor can offer suggestions and some other sources of internships include the Career Resource Center, professors, and personal contacts.
- If you intend to use your current employer for internship credit be aware that course credit will only be granted when the internship is supervised by someone other than the student's regular supervisor and covers work experience outside the scope of the student's current job. In addition, the Current Employer Form will need to be completed and submitted to the MIS Department.
- Complete the internship forms and return them to the MIS Department with a copy of your degree audit at least one month before the start of the semester.
- If your internship is approved you will receive an email from the MIS Department stating that you have been granted permission to enroll yourself into the course through the online registration system.
- Start your internship.
- Submit the Mid-term paper and Final paper by the dates listed by the MIS Internship Advisor. Please refer to the Course Grading Criteria to determine what should be included in your papers. Late papers will result in a lowering of your final grade in the internship. Therefore, it is your responsibility to do whatever is necessary to get the assignment turned in on time.
- Complete the two evaluation forms by the Final Paper Due Date. It is your responsibility to (a) get the evaluation form to the supervisor and to (b) follow-up to ensure that it is received by the MIS Internship Advisor. Late evaluations will result in a lowering of your final grade in the internship.
