Individuals Involved In The Program
Internships Program Objectives
The following objectives guide the Internship Program:
- An internship provides meaningful work experience, which supplements and modifies ideas gained from academic courses.
- An internship enhances the student's subsequent academic work.
- An internship offers the student an opportunity to assess his/her abilities and interests in Marketing, thus assisting the student intern in choosing a specific career.
- An internship provides an inside exposure to the structure, operations, and decision processes within an organization without a commitment to a permanent employer.
- An internship places the student in a favorable position for permanent employment.
There are three individuals involved in the UCF Department of Marketing Internship Program. The responsibilities of each person are outlined below:
The Academic Advisor
The Academic Advisor is a faculty member in the UCF Department of Marketing who is responsible for requiring the student to perform certain academic tasks (see below) and evaluating the educational experience involved in the Internship. The Academic Advisor is also responsible for periodic consultations with the Student Intern and administrative contact with the Internship Organization's representative, the Intern Supervisor. The Academic Advisor serves as a "Broker" in establishing internships. Calls are received by the advisor from firms having potential internship opportunities.
Students with an interest in working in an internship position voluntarily meet with the advisor, discuss the program and provide a resume. Internship opportunities are made available for posting on the internship opportunity bulletin board located outside BA315. Students are also encouraged to fax their resumes to registered firms directly. The advisor also faxes student resumes to registered firms. A review of resumes is followed by personal interviews. If the interview is mutually satisfactory the student is hired by the internship organization. Both the firm and the student are obliged to notify the advisor that an internship has been established and at that time the student must register for MAR 4941.
The Student Intern
The Student Intern is responsible for applying his/her marketing knowledge gained from prior and concurrent marketing coursework to the marketing tasks assigned to him or her by the Internship Organization. It is a requirement of the Student Intern to submit regular bi-weekly reports of Internship experiences, and their educational benefits, to the Academic Advisor. The Student Intern will perform tasks assigned by the Internship Organization to the best of his/her ability in an appropriate and professional manner.
The Internship Organization
The Internship Organization is responsible for providing the Student Intern with challenging experiences, which will allow the intern to use his/her academic marketing knowledge and to gain valuable practical experience in the world of marketing professionals.
It is recognized that many jobs will require interns to complete some menial tasks, (stuffing envelopes, filing, answering phones, clipping newspapers, etc.) It is also recognized that these jobs offer little educational reward and so the assignment of such activities to interns should be kept to a minimum. The Internship Organization is responsible for identifying a specific representative, referred to as the Intern Supervisor, to work with the Student Intern and who will submit a final overall evaluation of the Student Intern.
Specific Internship Requirements
Student Interns are required to submit to the Internship Coordinator written bi-weekly reports of experiences with the Internship Organization, specifically identifying the educational benefits derived from these experiences. An end of semester report that evaluates the internship experience in terms of quality of life, busywork and educational reward. This report should detail the intern's creative activity with the firm and include copies of the intern's creative output.
Interns will normally work 20 hours per week for the Internship Organization. The number of hours may be altered slightly if mutually agreeable to the Student Intern, Intern Coordinator, and the Academic Advisor. The Internship Organization will be expected to provide the following:
- A detailed description of the activities and professional marketing/educational experiences that will characterize the Student Intern's employment during the semester. (Intention to Participate form).
- Compensation of at least six dollars ($6.00) per hour, subject to negotiations with the Academic Advisor and Student Intern.
- Periodic interaction with Academic Advisor regarding progress to date and problem areas.
- An overall evaluation of the Student Intern's performance.
The end of semester report and the supervisor's evaluation of the intern will be due by the second (2nd) Wednesday prior to the end of classes for the semester. In addition to submitting the bi-weekly written report and the end of semester report, each Student Intern is expected to schedule meetings with the Internship Coordinator. The due dates for the bi-weekly Student Intern reports to be submitted to the Internship Coordinator are as follows:
- 3rd Friday of the Internship
- 5th Friday of the Internship
- 7th Friday of the Internship
- 9th Friday of the Internship
- 11th Friday of the Internship
