Professional Development
Socialization Process
The Ph.D. program provides preparation for a career as an academic scholar. Consequently, Ph.D. students are expected to participate in virtually all career-enhancing opportunities offered by the department. For example, students should attend all presentations given in the Department by faculty, visiting scholars or faculty position applicants. They should attend any discussion sessions offered by faculty, including "brown-bag" sessions to discuss research or other issues.
Doctoral Student Participation in Conferences and Consortia
The College of Business Administration and UCF Graduate Studies offer funding opportunities to support student conference travel to participate in research presentations or other conference activities. Participation at professional conferences is an important part of students' professional development. Thus, students should expect to attend two national Academy of Management Doctoral Student Consortia, with their primary employment domain targeted for the second visit. Students may also want to consider attending Southern Academy of Management Doctoral Student Consortia during the fall of their third year. In the event that nominations to a particular consortium are restricted and multiple students apply, students must submit a current vita and a research portfolio to the departmental Ph.D. coordinator. The student judged by the department's faculty as being most worthy will be awarded the nomination.
Ph.D. student travel funds may be attained from several sources including:
- UCF Graduate Studies
- UCF Student Government Association
- Conferences occasionally offer student discounts or support for student travel
- Management Department ($300 is the typical minimum annual reimbursement, but additional reimbursement funds may be available at the end of each budget year. Students must seek funding from the first three sources listed prior to requesting departmental funding)
